8 Important Rules for Internet Dating
By Beth Moore
While Online dating used to be a pretty alternative way to meet people, it is fast becoming one of the most normal ways for people to begin real relationships. However, even now with online dating becoming an ordinary way to meet potential mates, only about 10% of people who join a dating site ever have success making a real connection. Here are some things that you can do to make sure that you are part of the winning 10% demographic.

Get Ready to Begin

Research – Before you just randomly pick a dating site make sure that it is one that works for you. To do this you will need to have a bit of thought into exactly what you are looking for in your date. You will want to consider geographic location, and which demographic your are looking for. While there are many general, dating sites, there are also quite a few niche sites that cater to bikers, single parents, same sex couples, etc. So give a little thought as to whom you are looking for, and then you will know what site will suit your needs the best.

User Name – Think about what your user name says about you. Look for an identity that makes a great first impression, but make sure that it really represents you as well. Try not to be too clever, because most people will not even get it. Remember that you are using this ID to meet people for the first time, so you might want to keep sexual innuendo out of your ID naming process as well. If you are not sure what to use for your ID, using your own name as a base is a good plan, and you can always embellish it a bit to spark it up if you wish.

Photo – Make sure that you post your photo. The advantage to using a multimedia technology to find people that you want to have some idea of what the person looks like before you take the time to meet them. It is human nature to be attracted by looks, so while there is much more to a relationship than your looks, you cannot ignore looks as an important part of the equation. So when you are posting your picture, make sure that it is representative of how you actually do look in real life.

Profile – Fill out the entire profile. If you are going to date online, then just do it right. Fill out the profile as thoughtfully and completely as you possibly can. If you cannot invest the time to do it as you are signing up, then schedule a time to go back in to update your profile.

Attitude – You always want to put your best foot forward, and your online profile is no exception. If you come across as a well-rounded person in your profile, you will stand a much better chance of attracting healthy and happy people. If you present yourself as a dark and worried soul, you may be seriously limiting your selection of people to date.

Priorities – Of course when you are searching for the perfect match you can have a list of a hundred traits that you require, and you will very likely grow old by yourself. Instead, be practical, and think about what is really important to you. Try to limit it to no more than three traits and prioritize them. This way if you meet someone who is perfect, but just an inch shorter than your third priority, you may begin to understand that you are a lucky guy or gal. By having a few clear priorities you also give yourself a larger field from which to choose.

Full Features – Use the features that the online dating site offers. It may have an internal email, voice messaging, or instant messaging. Whatever features it offers, use them. It will make your whole online experience more fun, and it will increase your chances of making a really quality contact.

Look Often – Make sure that you check in with your online dating site often. Most dating sites have new members joining all of the time. Try to go in regularly to see if any new members strike your fancy. Another good thing to know, is that if you sign in more frequently it moves you higher in the search ranking, so logging in regularly also increases the chance of someone finding you.

Internet dating is not so very different from regular dating. With a little bit of planning and thought, you can use these tips to make your efforts highly successful.
